‘We're gonna get soaked:' Showers, storms and ‘repeated downpours' in Chicago forecast

Rain and storms move back into the Chicago area Friday, with “repeated downpours” starting in the afternoon and into Saturday morning

“Rain and plenty of it,” NBC 5 Storm Team meteorologist Pete Sack said, of the forecast. “We’re gonna get soaked.”

Early Friday morning, heavy rain was over Iowa and moving east. Models showed rain and embedded, non-severe thunderstorms will move into Chicago’s far western counties about 12 p.m.

“That soaking is on the way for us,” Sack said.

Around 3 p.m., Chicago will see showers and storms, Sack said. Rain, heavy at times, will continue through Friday night and overnight, with localized flooding possible.

The rain will lead to muddy conditions in Grant Park, where hundreds of thousands of people will be at Lollapalooza.

“Get ready for some soggy conditions,” Sack said.

Rain will continue through Saturday morning, Sack said. Scattered showers will continue into the daytime, and some could linger into the night.

“Through 9 p.m., still the chance for a stray shower,” Sack said.

By Sunday afternoon, conditions were expected to dry out. Most parts of the Chicago area will see between one and two inches of rainfall, with some parts seeing even more.

The National Weather Service also warned of high waves of Lake Michigan beaches through Monday morning, leading to dangerous swimming conditions.

Early next week, dry, sunny conditions were expected.
