OpenAI Announces Irish Expansion to Meet Growing AI Demand

OpenAI is expanding its European headquarters in Dublin, creating 250 new jobs.

The creator of ChatGPT will lease 88,000 sq ft at the Tropical Fruit Warehouse office in Dublin’s docklands in order to meet “rapidly growing demand from users, customers and developers across the European region,” the company said in a statement. It already employs around 100 Irish staff.

Bloomberg previously reported the company was considering an office expansion in Dublin, underscoring the race to boost global uptake of its artificial intelligence services.

Ireland already hosts the European headquarters of many of the largest tech companies such as Meta Platforms Inc., Apple Inc. and Alphabet Inc. Anthropic is also expanding its workforce in Dublin.

Ireland has been disproportionately impacted by AI-related job layoffs. Meta Platforms Inc. and and ByteDance’s TikTok both recently announcing they were culling roles in Ireland.

The new roles include engineering, user operations, human resources, finance, privacy and legal, according to the statement.

“Ireland’s talent base and strong research ecosystem puts us in a strong position to take advantage of the AI revolution,” Irish Prime Minister Micheal Martin said in the statement.
