i3: launcher that offers shell(-style) completion + history

having to migrate from awesomewm to i3 (can't make awesome run anymore, and I need something that has a wayland perspective, anyways).

Problem: dmenu as launcher is really not great; I'd like to get the awesome behaviour, where in the status bar, after pressing mod+r, I can start typing commands, and tab complete them (and cycle through alternatives with tab).

dmenu seems to stick to first alternative; say I want to launch strawberry, I type stra + tab, get strace, and I'd ideally then would like to not have to switch to cursor keys to select other alternatives, but tab further on.

what's missing most is that up doesn't walk through previous commands. It's quite common that I need the same command I ran not too long ago again!
