What is SmolFinance?

SmolFinance is a local-first trading and journaling application, written in Go.

When I first began exploring the tools available to traders, I was overwhelmed by the sheer number of platforms, all promising sleek dashboards and endless features. Eventually, I realized much of it was noise. SmolFinance takes a different approach: it delivers open-source, professional-grade analytics without cloud lock-in, subscriptions, or hidden data collection — the kind so common in mainstream trading dashboards.

What SmolFinance aims to do is offer an open source “trading OS” to traders of all shapes and sizes. Simple, fast, personal. It’s the type of first principle software a trader can actually grow with.

Simple layers to understanding SmolFinance

Broker Ingestion Layer: Quite simply, it imports trade data from CSV exports or broker APIs (Binance, IBKR, Alpaca, TradeStation, TD Ametrade, etc)

Cleans and normalizes it into one format Writes it to local database

Local Database layer: Store and query Uses DuckDB (for analytical queries) or SQLite (for smaller setups) Tables like trades, tags, notes, positions All queries are local and SQL based. Easy to audit, modify, and extend

Journaling Layer: Add human context Users can annotate trade Notes, tags, and emotions are stored alongside trade entries You can review patterns later

Analytics Layer: Analyze and visualise Win rate Expectancy Drawdown Equity curve R:R ratio

Automation Layer (obviously): Assistance with behavior regulation and to learn YAML-defined rules checked periodically Helps prevent emotional decisions and identify systemic behaviors

SmolFinance is not an exchange or live trading tool. Its is a personal analytics and reflection environment for traders, designed to teach them about their behavior, habits, and performance through data.
