Summer program trains the next generation of veterinarians

For many people, pets aren’t just animals.

They’re members of the family.

So when they get sick or hurt, it’s important they have the best people taking care of them.

The Veterinary Specialty Center in Bannockburn is making sure the next generation of animal doctors is ready for the job through its four-week Summer Enrichment Program.

“We invite students of underrepresented backgrounds to join us,” said Dr. Shaunita Sharpe. “…They shadow our specialists from the hospital. They get hands-on experience with our support staff and our veterinary nurses.

The students get a mentor and a stipend. Some also receive lodging. All of the students currently enrolled in the program say they plan on attending veterinary school.

“This program is really broadening my view of what veterinary medicine is,” said Cameron Valadez, who attends the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. “It just ignites my passion. It’s something that I’ve been looking for for a long time.”

Susan Ledezna, a student at Texas State University, said she thinks the hands-on experience is amazing.

“I’ve done probably more here than I have in any other place within these past two weeks,” she said. “I’ve learned how to do blood draws and intubations, and I really love it here because everyone is so kind and nice. They walk you through it and you’re allowed to make mistakes.“

McKenzie Renfroe, who attends Tuskegee University, said the doctors are very helpful – and patient.

“They know that I’m not in vet school yet, so they’re willing to explain a lot of terminology that I don’t understand,” she explained.

“This is the only place that I know of that offers such an amazing opportunity for students,” Sharpe said. “We are a small program, but hopefully we’re making a big impact not only with those students but hopefully with the hospitals and community around us.”
