OpenAI Unveils ChatGPT Work Agent to Field Tasks for Hours

OpenAI is introducing a new artificial intelligence agent that’s meant to field a wider range of complex tasks for hours at a time, bolstering its push to appeal to more business professionals.

The tool, called ChatGPT Work, is designed to help create documents, spreadsheets, presentations and web applications. ChatGPT Work is powered by GPT-5.6, the company’s latest AI model which is being released Thursday after initially being delayed by the Trump administration.

OpenAI and rival Anthropic PBC have been racing to build more sophisticated agents to streamline a broader mix of work, building on their success with tools to automate the process of writing and debugging code. Earlier this year, Anthropic unveiled a similar product called Claude Cowork, with the goal of appealing to a bigger audience.

OpenAI and Anthropic have both filed confidentially to go public. Anthropic is expected to make its Wall Street debut as soon as this fall, Bloomberg News has reported. OpenAI is considering going public next year.
