Popular fireworks sold nationwide recalled days before Fourth of July celebrations

Two popular kinds of fireworks sold at fireworks stores nationwide have been recalled, with the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission saying the fireworks can tip over or malfunction and lead to serious injuries.

Both sets of fireworks, from Winco, were recalled July 2. The recall comes days before dozens of fireworks shows are set to light up the skies across Chicago and the suburbs for the Fourth of July holiday.

One of the fireworks varieties recalled is Winco’s Unity 7 Shot 200 Gram Aerial Cake Firework Devices, model MEF6096. According to the CSPC, the fireworks can tip over, “posing a risk of serious injury from explosion and burn hazards.”

The fireworks were sold at Pyro City stores and other independent fireworks stores nationwide from Jan. 2026 through May 2026, with prices ranging from $6 to $8. They have have a red, white and blue label that has the with the word “Unity” written on it. In total, about 87,120 units are being recalled.

“Consumers should stop using the recalled fireworks immediately and return the fireworks to the store where they were purchased for a full refund,” the recall notice said.

Winco is also recalling three packs of Roman Candles 8 Shot Firework Devices. According to the notice, the fireworks can malfunction, with shots potentially blowing out the side of the tube.

The packaging is red, white and blue, with the word “Hometown” written on the label. About 13,500 units sold at Pyro City and other fireworks stores were recalled, with customers urged to return them for a refund.

According to the CPSC, no injuries were reported in either of the recalls.

Illinois has strict fireworks laws, and possession of most consumer fireworks is illegal.
