Data Brokers Part 2: Surveillance Pricing

For most of commerce a price was a single public number, the same for everyone who looked at it. Surveillance pricing replaces it with a private one — set not by what a thing costs but by what a model believes you, in particular, will pay. A history of how that number came apart, why the practice survives only in concealment, and why it falls hardest on those least able to refuse.
