How would I increase focus on this closed question

Yesterday, I asked this:

What do I replace the XUL/XHTML broadcast+observers pattern with?

this is a question not about a specific program, but about a mechanism. It was closed for lack of focus. (It was also downvoted 5 times without a single comment as to why.)

I am not quite sure what kind of focusing I was asked for. If the close-voters wanted a focus on a specific program, specific use of observers - that's not going to happen; and I believe it is legitimate to ask what to replace a popular mechanism/idiom with, generally. But perhaps people mean focusing the general question more? I would have expected some guidance in the form of a comment.
