Gaudí, Pagès i l'Obrera
Mataró occupies a significant place in Antoni Gaudí’s professional biography.
It was commissioned by Salvador Pagès, director of the Sociedad Cooperativa La Obrera Mataronense and Antoni Gaudí’s first client, that the architect designed a pioneering workers’ neighbourhood for which he built the first three buildings he ever designed.
La Obrera Mataronense, the first production cooperative in Spain, was founded in Mataró in 1864 and, after an initial period of activity in the village of Gràcia, ten years after its creation it was established in La Barca, a horticultural area in the Eixample district of Mataró.
