It's just the standard Wordpress comment plugin, right? Jetpack or something like that? Maybe they're open to modifying it locally, but with every update the changes get reverted? That's my experience with PHP/SQL web portals. Don't bother customizing them because updates just break your site all the time. They really should just move away from Wordpress. What a bag full of monkeys.
