SSD drive formatting fails with I/O error (Invalid field in cdb)

I just received on the mail a new portable SSD drive. The disks utility reports a single non-formatted partition, so I went on to format, but no matter what it fails.

Then I used sg_decode_sense to translate the error codes into human readable text. But with those messages I couldn't get any further.

Below is the info output from hdparm. The statement "Cannot perform double-word IO" looks promising, but searching in this and other fora that message appears associated with mechanical disks. There isn't an obvious course of action.

What else can I try to format this drive?
